Curse of the Devils

Posted by roamingtherinks on July 23, 2011 at 10:15 PM

It is old news by now, but most of you have probably already heard that the powers that be in Devils land have pulled the plug on their ECHL affiliate in Trenton.  At Roaming the Rinks we are fortunate enough to see a wide variety of hockey played in lots of different markets, in various leagues.  There are loads of successful organizations who do things right and keep fans interested.  There are also those teams that once you leave the arena, you figure the team may be on borrowed time due to its limited fan support.  RTR has seen a lot of weak, unentertaining, lackluster organizational performances, but 2 that come to mind are the Lowell Devils, and sure enough, the Trenton Devils.

That's not to say the players were not hustling and giving it their all, but after my visit to both arenas in 2009 I came away with 2 distinct similarities:  A severe lack of attendance and fan interest, and an overwhelming feeling that the red, black and white Devils logo was being shoved down the fans' throat. Its as if the Devils came into an area and simply hung their name over the door where the once loyal fans of the prior teams would enter and said "you now have a team owned by an NHL club and you will like it"  and no further effort was done to attract, or even keep, people in the seats.   Although the Lowell Lock Monsters were never near the top of the AHL attendance board, they did develop a bit of a following.  The trouble was that one of the few things more boring than the trap is the way the Devils handled their minor league affiliates which they themselves owned.

Trenton, although having an arena located in an area where most folks don't want to hang around just for the fun of it, supported the ECHL's Titans with a loyal fanbase and had good attendance and successful teams.  Enter the Devils organization and you have a recipe for a mass fan exodus away from Sovereign Bank arena (or whatever you want to call it these days).  Some blame it on having Devils red in an area only 45 minutes from the Flyers home.  It seems to me it was apathy of the Devils organization which drove away the fans by putting a weak product on the ice, and didn't give the fans a reason to spend their hard earned bucks on the team anymore.  The photos above show empty barns in both cities, and frankly that is a shame.  This post is not meant to attack the fans of these 2 cities, but when I was looking back through our photo archive it became painfully obvious that the empty seats made these moves unavoidable, and both Lowell and Trenton were operated in nearly identical fashion despite having excellent buildings for hockey.   Hopefully Trenton gets another team, and it is a shame for the fans of Lowell and Trenton that they now no longer have a team to root for.  With the Albany Devils last in the AHL standings and attendance column last season could this be another doomed Devils project?  We'll find out, but unfortunately the well has been poisoned by the Devils twice already.

And the NJ Devils weren't even 2000 fans/game ahead of the Thrashers last year.
It's a damn shame that Lamoriello has any success at all--his teams simply don't deserve it. I'll credit the man for being able to put together some very talented teams. BUT, what is the point if he can't build a fanbase anywhere. No one showed up to the Meadowlands. Not many more show up in Newark. I'll admit that Lowell and, to a lesser extent, Albany have both had their issues, but he most certainly did nothing to help. And he single-handedly killed Trenton.

I hate the fact that someone can be so alienating but still be so successful.

i am 12 and i live in nearby hamilton nj i used to go to about 16 trenton devils games a year it wasnt a big crowd but i liked it everyone there was freindly and the few fans that were there were devoted i was only 7 or 8 when the titans were here it used to be about 4500 to 5500 fans a night you know why because its mixed between flyers and devils fans here, but more flyers fans i am a devils fan but the draw was so good when the titans were around because the titans were the flyers affiliate i think if the titans were called the titans when the devils took over it would have still been a good draw maybe not as great as a flyers affiliate but still a good draw, but now the titans are back and are now the flyers affiliate hopefully a good draw and good fans now that the titans are back

It was announced the other day that the Flyers are placing an ECHL affiliate in Trenton for the 2011-12 season. I had a 12 game plan for the Titans their first season, but the plan tended to interfere with the Phantoms schedule, so I dropped the plan, but still managed to get to a couple of games a season. When the Titans became the Devils I completely lost interest. I plan on checking out a game or two this season.

Having followed AHL hockey here in Albany since 1993 I can honestly say things were not all that bad until the 2Ks. The Albany River Rats affiliated with the Devils enjoyed much success through the 1990s. That decent on ice product resulted in excellent fan support through the mid to late 1990s. Somewhere along the way the Devils lost sight of Albany's importance, the philosiphy that a winning environment in Albany spawned success down in New Jersey. If last season left the Devils shaking their heads the shame on them. The Devils attempting to throw their brand of hockey down the throats of markets they had no business being in and without a plan for success was not only a recipe for disaster but a sever financial burdon on the organization. For the last decade of the NJ Devils affiliated Albany River Rats the playoffs were wishful thinking, slowly and surely the fans base dwindled. The Devils did blow a good opportunity as well since the River Rats former owner was willing to work with the Devils organization in keeping the River Rats name and logo but we all know how that turned out.

I find minor league hockey games to be almost as fun as NHL games. I am dying to go to the Hershey Bear's arena in Hershey, PA. The place has so much history. Got to check out the Knoxville Ice Bears at Thanksgiving, that arena was old and rustic. http://www.fromthisseat.com.
